Posted 18.Jan.02 Interview: Mike Vejar | Read |

Sci-fi television is a small world, and nowhere is that better reflected than in the short list of directors who regularly frequent the various genre series. Director Michael Vejar's name is on that short list. Over the past 15 years, Vejar has directed episodes of every Star Trek series from Next Generation on, as well The X-Files, Babylon 5 and Crusade. Some of most noteworthy Babylon 5 episodes are credited to Vejar, including "Comes the Inquisitor" and "War Without End," as well as the TV-movie In the Beginning. We spoke with him a few days before the B5: Rangers premiere.

Posted 17.Jan.02 Interview: Dylan Neal | Read |

Dylan Neal has something to prove. Or rather, his alter ego, Captain David Martel, does. As the commander of the Liandra, Martel isn't your typical starship captain. Though a dedicated Ranger, he has a something of a rebellious streak; his crew calls him by his first name, even as he aptly guides them through the most harrowing of experiences. A native of Ontario, Canada, he first became famous as a soap star on The Bold and the Beautiful, and went on to become a regular on Dawson's Creek and Hyperion Bay. We spoke with him in May on the Vancouver set of Rangers.

Posted 2.Jan.02 Interview: Enid-Raye Adams | Read |

Unlike Firell, her placid, Zen-like Minbari character in Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers, Enid-Raye Adams exudes exuberant energy. It's easy to understand why: In addition to acting, Adams is a standup comic. For last year's Vancouver International Comedy Festival, she co-wrote and performed a well-received one-woman show about service-industry workers, "Would You Like Fries With That?" We spoke with her during a set visit in May.

Posted 21.Dec.01 Interview: J. Michael Straczynski | Read |

Novelist, author and screenwriter Joe Straczynski has a long relationship with science fiction and related genres. He was the story editor and primary writer for the first-run syndicated episodes of The Twilight Zone revival series, and, among his other accomplishments, created and wrote most of the scripts for the Babylon 5 series and telefilms. But you already knew that. Here's what he had to say about the new movie, The Legend of the Rangers.

Posted 21.Dec.01 Interview: Dean Marshall | Read |

A sci-fi fan since his youth, Dean Marshall portrays Malcolm Bridges, the infiltration and covert-operations specialist aboard the Liandra. Marshall's career includes roles in SCI FI's First Wave and The Outer Limits, as well as in such other genre shows as Poltergeist: The Legacy and NightMan.

Posted 20.Dec.01 Interview: Alex Zahara | Read |

Zahara portrays Dulann, a Minbari warrior-monk who also serves as first officer on the Liandra. Zahara's no stranger to science fiction: He's made the rounds of the usual Vancouver-based suspects, including Dark Angel, Andromeda, Stargate SG-1 and The Outer Limits. Zahara's association with Babylon 5 creator Joe Straczynski will continue beyond Rangers: He plays the recurring character Ezekiel in Stracyznski's upcoming series, Jeremiah.

Posted 20.Dec.01 Interview: Gus Lynch | Read |

Gus Lynch is an imposing character, which helps explain why his career so far includes lots of roles as security guards and similar strong-arm types in such films as Saving Silverman and such TV series as Night Visions and Special Unit 2. In Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers, Gus plays Tirk, a Drazi — perhaps the first of that alien race to serve the Interstellar Alliance and become a Ranger.

Posted 20.Dec.01 Interview: Brad Proctor & Rachel Griffin | Read |

On the set of Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers are a number of people constantly watching and waiting off-camera. Among them are the makeup artists who deal with the many prosthetics used during a day of shooting. Their job is to apply makeup when moisture changes the texture and color of the prosthetic, to repair any tears and to provide that indefinable something that makes alien characters look real. We spoke to two such talented individuals during our Vancouver set visit in May.

Posted 12.Dec.01 Interview: Warren T. Takeuchi | Read |

No stranger to science fiction, Toronto-born Warren Teruo Takeuchi has made the rounds of sci-fi series and features shot in Vancouver; he played a reporter in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie The 6th Day, and he's guested in such series as Dark Angel, First Wave, Stargate SG-1, The Sentinel and The X-Files (the Mythos episode "Nisei"). Clad in the beige, kimono-style robes that the actors are wearing for a scene being rehearsed on a May afternoon in Vancouver, Warren took a moment in his trailer to discuss his new role as Kitaro Sasaki, the navigation, communication and translation specialist on the Liandra.

Posted 12.Dec.01 Interview: Myriam Sirois | Read |

Twenty-six-year-old Canadian Myriam Sirois portrays Ranger and Mars Dome native Sarah Cantrell, a loyal human friend of Captain David Martell's. Weapons specialist on the Liandra, Cantrell knows from hardship: Her parents died in the war between Mars and Earth. Sirois' previous credits include doing voice-overs for several anime works, including Ranma ½ and Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. We spoke with her on-set in May.

Posted 06.Dec.01 Interview: Executive Producer Douglas Netter | Read |

Veteran producer Doug Netter was executive vice president and chief operating officer of MGM Studios from 1970-1975. A colleague of Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski ever since 1987's Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, Netter is responsible for a great deal of the negotiations related to B5: The Legend of the Rangers. We interviewed him on the Vancouver set in May, when he'd flown in from Los Angeles for a B5 fan event.

Posted 06.Dec.01 Interview: Jennie Rebecca Hogan | Read |

Newcomer Jennie Rebecca Hogan is nearly unrecognizable as the Narn Na'Feel in the Legend of the Rangers movie. As she walked into the room during our set visit in May, her beautiful features were nearly obscured by make-up and prosthetics — but her enthusiasm for the role came through.
