Review:
When we look back on the episodes of "Farscape" at the end of the series (hopefully that will not occur for many years) and try to pick the episodes that were the best of the best, "the Way We Weren't" will surely be among the chosen. In the same calibre of such episodes as "a Human Reaction", "a Bug's Life", "Nerve", and "the Hidden Memory", this episode dealt a lot with emotion in a dramatic plot that was kept apace with action and suspense. In this episode, we see almost every character on the show have to confront emotions that are difficult for them to deal with. Zhaan, D'Argo, and Rygel all have to deal with what they have been concealing from their consciousness for some time: the fact that Aeryn was a Peacekeeper and that she did take part in the evil of the Peacekeepers in the past. Chiana pointed this out effectively when she asked the crew if they thought Aeryn was out doing something to the effect of picking flowers while the other Peacekeepers did the bad stuff. Pilot has to confront his hidden past and the fact that he was not bonded to Moya naturally. He also must confront the fact that his closest friend, Aeryn, was one of those complicit in the murder of Moya's first Pilot. Crichton must keep his emotions in check as he tries to be a source of help and stability for Aeryn in this crisis, while still managing to accept her past. He has to do a lot of soul searching regarding Aeryn and how much he has come to care for her. Finally, there is Aeryn's struggle to come to terms with her past which has been laid bare for all to see. She must not only confront her feelings about her complicity in the death of Moya's first pilot, but also her part in betraying a man she cared for to further her career, a career that she now looks back on with contempt. Aeryn must face her fellow crewmates that she had come to know as friends, but who now begin to judge her by her past. Finally, she must also confront her growing feelings for John. The past and present collide in a trully fantastic episode, featuring some of the best performances given by the actors, as well as excellent use of flashbacks and atmosphere to make this episode a trully memorable one.
