Europe, the Dark Ages. A king is betrayed and murdered; his infant son Siegfried is spirited away to anonymous safety under the protection of the blacksmith Eyvind (Max von Sydow).

Siegfried (Benno Fürmann) grows to manhood, and his destiny is revealed to him by the gods, who hurl to the Earth a meteor rich with the metal of the gods. Eyvind forges this alloy into a sword with no equal anywhere in the world.

What awaits Siegfried as he leaves home in search of his destiny is the glory of true love with the Valkyrie known as Brunhild (Kristanna Løken) — but first he must face the wrath of the dragon Fafnir, and the curse of the Nibelungs.

When the curse makes Siegfried forsake his true love for another woman, however, it invites the fury of the gods themselves — and sets in motion an expanding web of betrayal, deception and greed that ensnares mortals everywhere, plunging a world in chaos, and a kingdom into twilight.
