When a group of gigantic, unidentified undersea objects each displacing more than two tons of water overwhelms the U.S. attack sub U.S.S. Jimmy Carter with an electromagnetic pulse, the beautiful scientist DR. ANNE FLETCHER (Simmone Jade MacKinnon, Allie Reese on Baywatch, Nadia in SCI FI Pictures' Pythons 2) goes on red alert.
Fletcher head of the deep-sea military research center Hubris, located beneath the waters of the North Pole pleads with the U.N. not to respond with the unthinkable nuclear torpedoes launched into the Polaris trench near the pole. The trench is already emitting intense heat that is beginning to melt the polar ice cap. In 10 years, she estimates, the Earth will be covered in water.
Moreover, Fletcher believes there are intelligent transmissions emanating from the trench communication that warrants further study, lest the force that encountered the submarine does even more damage. But Fletcher's rival, DR. CHOMSKY (Mark Sheppard, TV's Firefly), is dead-set on nuking the trench, sealing it forever … and any intelligent life be damned. He persuades the delegates to vote for the nuclear solution and to vote Fletcher off the project.
But when Hubris launches its torpedoes, the station is attacked by a swarm of giant Electrophorus electricus electric eels that send out an electromagnetic pulse cutting off all communication with the outside world. Chomsky orders a follow-up mission to find out what happened and insists that Dr. Fletcher and her ex-husband, Navy Captain ANDY RAINES (David Keith, U-571, Daredevil, SCI FI Pictures' Sabretooth), be part of the investigating team. With them are the able-bodied seamen ARCIERO (Sean Whalen, Python, TV's Special Unit 2) and PROTAS (Armando Valdes).
Once inside the undersea fortress, the team finds the entire crew of men and women has been burned alive. Hubris itself, however, is completely intact and operational. And here, deep beneath the sea, Fletcher reveals a secret known only to her: that the eels slithering outside are intelligent beings, and have created the trench to prepare the planet for their young.
But Chomsky has a secret of his own: A fleet of nearly 50 nuclear attack subs, each ready to fire four one-megaton warheads, is converging on the trench.
Dr. Fletcher, desperate the stop the global disaster such an attack will bring, strives frantically to learn the eels' language in an attempt to warn them of the impending danger. With thousands of electrified leviathans and a nuclear armada outside Hubris, the end of the world is just an eel's length away. Get ready to squirm.
Directed by Paul Joshua Rubin in the tradition of SF-action specialist Phillip Roth (SCI FI Pictures' IF2: Interceptor Force 2), who produced with Jeffery Beach.
