Yaitanes burst onto the film scene at the age of 23 by directing Hard Justice, which went on to become the highest-grossing film ever backed by Nu Image Productions and was distributed internationally by New Line Cinema. Warner Brothers then signed Yaitanes to an exclusive, three-picture deal.

In true Hollywood fashion, after waiting seven hours in the lobby of Silver Pictures for a meeting with Joel Silver (producer of The Matrix, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon), Yaitanes showed the über-producer his trailer for Hard Justice and Silver immediately signed him to direct the first film for his Decade Pictures banner. Double Tap, starring Heather Locklear and Stephen Rea, was executive produced by Silver and Richard Donner. Jerry Bruckheimer then enlisted Yaitanes to direct multiple episodes of his first television series SOF: Special Ops Force. Yaitanes' other TV directing credits include episodes of The Invisible Man, Players, Martial Law, Nash Bridges, and the pilot for Cleopatra 2525.

Yaitanes directed the Showtime series Going to California, created by fellow Bostonian Scott Rosenberg (Con Air, Beautiful Girls), starring Vince Vaughn, Jaime Pressly and Jerry O'Connell.

For the acclaimed film Unstrung Heroes, directed by Diane Keaton, Yaitanes served as visual consultant and masterminded the shot design. The two teamed up again most recently on her film Hanging Up, which starred Keaton and Meg Ryan. This ongoing collaboration produced Yaitanes' most recent directorial effort prior to his Dune journey: the ensemble feature comedy Plan B, which stars Keaton, Bob Balaban and Paul Sorvino, and opened in theaters in summer of 2002.

Yaitanes, a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan, is a graduate of the University of Southern California Film School.
