Veteran director, writer and actor Steven Berkoff's repertoire includes an array of internationally acclaimed theatrical performances and directorial adaptations, ranging from Shakespeare to Kafka; from Wilde to original Berkoff works. Berkoff's innovative techniques have become textbook material for burgeoning actors. His writing, acting and directing have been lauded with numerous awards on both sides of the Atlantic. He has created and directed many adaptations for stage, several of which have been performed in countries across the globe.
Berkoff's film acting credits include A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Passenger, McVicar, Outland, Octopussy, Beverly Hills Cop and Rambo. He directed and co-starred with Joan Collins in the film version of Decadence.
Berkoff's numerous television productions include Metamorphosis for the BBC, Harry's Christmas for Limehouse, Silent Night for Initial/Channel 4, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart for Hawkshead/Channel 4. His television acting credits include War and Remembrance, Michaelangelo A Season of Giants, Attila, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, La Femme Nikita, and The Intruders.
Among Berkoff's original stage plays are East; Messiah: Scenes from a Crucifixion; The Secret Love Life of Ophelia and Brighton Beach Scumbags.
After studying drama and mime in London and Paris, Berkoff entered a series of repertory companies and in 1968 formed the London Theatre Group. He has published a variety of books, ranging from travel writing to poetry collections. He also has done a variety of voiceover work and books on tape. Berkoff also is a photographer, with a major exhibition slated for late 2002 in London.
Berkoff, a London native, has netted numerous awards for his work, including The Greek (L.A. Critics Award, Best Play, Best Direction, 1983); Decadence (L.A. Critics Award, Best Play, Best Performance, 1984); Kvetch (L.A. Critics Award Best Play, Best Direction, 1986; London Evening Standard Best Comedy of the Year, 1991); The Trial (Laurence Olivier Nomination, Best Play, 1991); Massage (L.A. Weekly Drama Awards Nomination, Best Performance, 1998); One Man (Laurence Olivier Nomination, Best Play, 1999); Shakespeare's Villains (L.A. Drama Circle, Best One Man Show, 1999); Messiah (Edinburgh Festival Fringe First, 2000; Belgrade Bitef, The Audience Award, 2001); and The Secret Love Life of Ophelia (Glasgow Herald Golden Angel Award, 2001).
