Dr. Bill Doleman was the principal investigator on the first archaeological dig at the alleged Roswell, N.M., alien-craft crash site. Son of a career Army officer, he was born in 1948 in La Paz, Bolivia. In 1970 he graduated with a B.A. in liberal arts from St. John's College in Santa Fe, N.M.
In 1975, while researching an article on excavations in Santa Fe, he "fell into" a career as an archaeologist at the Museum of New Mexico. This soon led to graduate work and employment as a project director at the University of New Mexico (UNM), where, in 1995, he earned his Ph.D. in anthropology.
In 2004, Doleman became director of New Mexico's statewide archaeological archive and database, known as ARMS. His research specialties include environmental analysis, prehistoric hunter-gatherers, geological methods in archaeology, computer database design and statistical analysis.
