AMEL LARRIEUX (Princess Maat)
In a building called Westbeth in the West Village of New York City, singer Amel Larrieux was raised surrounded by talented and inspirational artists in an open, creative environment. Drawing on those early influences, experiences and life lessons, she has created her own distinctive, soulful music.
Amel co-wrote and co-produced her debut solo album, Infinite Possibilities, which was released in 2000, with her husband Laru Larrieux. The album highlights her diverse background by drawing on a medley of music genres, such as Jazz, hip-hop, Gospel and even Middle Eastern, West African and Indian ethnic styles. In the early and mid-1990s, Amel was the lead singer and co-writer for the New York-based duo Groove Theory, whose debut album eventually went gold.
Amel's ever-evolving movement toward personal diversity and creativity has led her to expand her career in new directions. She was chosen as the face of Coach's new Japanese advertising campaign for Marie Claire magazine and was selected to be the sole performer at the Coach 60th Anniversary celebration in Japan. She was featured in the Essence On Campus College Tour, with which she visited and performed at several Black colleges across the country.
Amel and Laru currently are signing new recording artists to release albums on their record label, Pacific East, by 2002. Amel also is working on launching her exclusive line of fashion designs, and she and Laru are both working on several project ideas involving children's publications. Amel's second solo album, Brave Bird, will be released later this year.
