The Outer Limits
THE ARCHITECTS OF FEAR
Directed by Byron Haskin
Written by Meyer Dolinsky

Because the world faces the possibility of extinction through nuclear accident, an international group of renowned scientists meets in secret to find an answer. Their decision: Force the hostile nations to join together to fight an outside enemy, and bind them in fear of some unknown power.

In order to create this fear they decide to create an "alien monster" from one of their own ... a grotesque mutilation of the human body that it will truly appear to come from another planet. The man chosen will be declared dead and will never resume normal life.

NOTES: It may be hard to believe now, but when this episode originally aired, the monster was actually blacked out on television screens in various parts of the country because some station executives considered it too terrifying for viewers to see. Robert Culp and Geraldine Brooks bring a genuine warmth and regard for each other, both tender and passionate, which only makes Culp's transformation into ferocity and alienation all the more effective. Culp would also star in two more of the greatest Outer Limits episodes, "Corpus Earthling" and "Demon with a Glass Hand," before going on to star in I Spy, the first TV drama to have an African-American actor, Bill Cosby, as a lead. Culp and Cosby would become one of the great screen teams and help shape television history. Culp would later portray Bill Maxwell in the 1980s superhero series The Greatest American Hero.
