By accident, an astronaut is pushed through the time-space continuum and returns to the earth of the distant future. It is a barren desert inhabited by a few ugly, scarred descendants of generations of mutations.
The astronaut dies, but Andro finds the girl destined to be the mother of the yet unconceived tyrant. Andro hypnotically hides his ugliness and convinces the girl to go with him to his land of the future, but he cannot survive the shock twice. Alone in her space ship and changed by her collision with the continuum the girl becomes a tiny shining star.
This disaster was brought about by a tyrant born in the early years of the atom and the astronaut and the inhabitant, Andro, decide to go back through the continuum in order to destroy the tyrant in his infancy. They go back too far and miss their target date.
NOTES: "The Man Who Was Never Born" showcases Conrad Hall's distinctive cinematography that so uniquely defined the look of the black-and-white Outer Limits. Visually, the stories contrasts are effectively captured, from the opening smoldering, shadowy images on the barren, bleak world of Earth's tomorrow to the fairy tale shimmering glow of a bride in wedding dress fleeing through idyllic wood-scape.
Martin Landau (who also appeared in the Outer Limits episode "The Bellero Shield") and Shirley Knight would both go on to become Oscar winners. Their performances here turn this fairy tale forlornly real by its conclusion, a haunting final image of isolation and sacrifice.
