At the Defense Department's top-secret Cypress Hills Research Center, scientists are kept under constant watch through O.B.I.T., the Outer Band Individuated Teletracer, a mysterious electronic device that tunes in on the different wavelengths of the human body and amplifies them into a visible picture, much as a television receiver turns signals into images and sounds.
After a murder at the research center and a subsequent Senate investigation, its head, Dr. Scott, vanishes. The only person left to operate the machine is administrator Byron Lomax, but strangely, his is the only wavelength that cannot be tuned into by O.B.I.T.
