In the advanced culture of the planet Venus — its inhabitants sated with a millennium of struggle, effort and growth and now ready to lead lives of contemplation, freed of all other activity — a search is under way for a source of workers to meet daily needs.
As an experiment, they plan to uproot the residents of a six-block area in a wealthy California suburb. If these people survive, the Venusians will then transplant the remainder of Earth's denizens to their planet and make us their slaves.
Caught up in this experiment are Dr. Simon Holm and his wife Andrea, who are on the verge of a separation. This startling crisis reunites them, but Andrea begins to assume the characteristics of her Venusian captors.
