The Outer Limits
THE CHAMELEON
Directed by Gerd Oswald
Story by Robert Towne, Joseph Stefano and Lou Morheim
Teleplay by Robert Towne

The military, investigating the crash-landing of a hostile UFO that kills some of their men, recovers one alien body. Desperate, the military brings in an assassin, Louis Mace, and uses genetic engineering to transform him into a similar "alien" in order to have him infiltrate the alien craft. But though his deceit is quickly seen through, the aliens are peaceful and bear him no grudge. They fought in self-defense, and offer him a second chance. Driven by duty, Mace kills one of the two surviving aliens, but then decides to set aside his mission, remain as an alien, and help the last survivor repair his ship. Mace's superiors have the choice of blowing up the ship as it departs, but realize the aliens mean them no harm.
