Henderson James, a 21st-century space anthropologist, secretly studies a strange animal from another planet. Captain Karl Emmett, a retired interplanetary explorer, had smuggled the creature back to Earth in spite of a 1976 ban on importation. The creature, a Megasoid, possesses intelligence higher than humans' but it is obsessed with only one emotion hate.
When the creature escapes its confinement, James has the Federal Duplication Bureau create an exact duplicate of his human body for the sole purpose of finding and killing the creature. The two Henderson Jameses, original and duplicate, soon find themselves endangered not by the Megasoid but by each other.
