Postcards to the Edge
July 3 - November 2, 1997

I N S P I R A T I O N

In the summer of 1977, humankind embarked on one of its most noble missions: to inform the rest of the Universe of our presence.

The Voyager spacecraft launched with a 12-inch disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is hoped that an advanced spacefaring civilization will someday encounter this "message in a bottle," which will act as an introduction to our species. Once alerted to our existence, they might feel compelled to respond.

It will be forty thousand years before Voyager makes a close approach to any other planetary system.

Twenty years later, the Sci-Fi Channel is embarking on a similar mission. Using newly available communications systems - the Internet and satellite technology - we are creating an opportunity for the public to send their greetings to any extraterrestrial beings who may be listening.

Beginning July 3, we will be collecting your messages at this website. Message gathering will continue through the conclusion of SCIFI.CON 2.0, the Internet-based science fiction convention, which runs from October 31 through November 2. At that time we will transmit these messages out to the cosmos via satellite.

Travelling at the speed of light, it is possible that these messages will someday be humanity's first contact with an alien culture.
