Author Biography and Bibliography

Robert Sheckley was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in New Jersey. He went into the U.S. Army after high school and served in Korea. After discharge he attended NYU, graduating with an arts degree. He began to sell stories to all the science-fiction magazines soon after his graduation, producing several hundred stories over the next several years. During this period Sheckley also wrote fifteen episodes for the television series Captain Video and sixty short-short stories that were read aloud by Basil Rathbone on Monitor Radio. He also wrote The People Trap, which became the basis for a two-hour television special.

His first novel, Immortality, Inc., was made into the movie Freejack, starring Emilio Estevez, Mick Jagger, and Rene Russo, and he wrote the story upon which the movie The Tenth Victim, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress, was based. In addition, his short story "The Price of Peril" was the basis for the French movie La Prix du Danger.

Sheckley collaborated with the late Roger Zelazny on a three-book fantasy series comprising Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming, If at Faust You Don't Succeed, and A Farce to Be Reckoned With. His most recent novel is Godshome.

Sheckley was fiction editor of Omni Magazine from March 1980 through the summer of 1982 and a Visiting Scholar at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT in Boston in 1983. In 1991 he received the Raymond Z. Gallun award for contributions to the genre of science-fiction. He is married to the writer Gail Dana and lives in Portland, Oregon.
