Kate Wilhelm wrote her first short story in 1956, and has since published over three dozen booksnovels and short story collections. Her fiction ranges over science fiction (her first published stories); mysteries (her first novel); fantasy and magical realism; psychological suspense; mimetic, comic, and family sagas; a multimedia stage production; and radio plays. "I'm a Gemini, and we're known to be fickle," she says. Her work has been adapted for television and movies, here and in England and Germany.
Among her numerous awards are the Hugo and Nebula, the Kurt Lasswitz Award from Germany, and the Prix Apollo from France. Her work has been translated into more than a dozen languages.
She and her husband Damon Knight helped establish the Clarion Workshop, and were regular instructors there for two weeks every summer for twenty-eight years. Through the auspices of the State Department Cultural Affairs Office they have lectured together at universities in South America and in Asia.
Kate Wilhelm makes her home with her family in Eugene, Oregon.
