John Wyndham, whose real name was John Beynon Harris, was born in Knowle, Warwickshire in 1903, and did more than any other British writer since H. G. Wells to make science fiction popular in the UK. Critics ascribed his success to the fact that his plots, however fantastic, were characterized by inventiveness, clarity and a profound sympathy for mankind in the nuclear age.

He died in 1969.
