Mary Rickert grew up in Fredonia, Wisconsin. When she was eighteen she moved to California, where she worked at Disneyland. She still has fond memories of selling balloons there at night and learning to boogie board during the day. Sometimes she would go to the beach early in the morning, before anyone else was there, sit in the lifeguard's tower, and write poetry. After many years (and through the sort of "odd series of events" that describe much of her life), she got a job as a kindergarten teacher in a small private school for gifted children. She worked there for almost a decade, then left to pursue her life as a writer. Because the position of writer is for many years one of apprenticeship, she worked at a series of odd jobsbookshop clerk, personnel clerk, hotel night auditor, and coffee shop clerkbefore settling into her current position as a nanny. There are, of course, mysterious gaps in this account, and that is where all the truly interesting stuff happened.
She has had many stories published by The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. A few of those stories have been reprinted in Year's Best anthologies. Her short story collection, Map of Dreams, is due to be published by Golden Gryphon press in October, 2006.
