Slither's Gunn Sees Aliens
James Gunn, writer/director of the upcoming SF horror movie Slither, told SCI FI Wire that he was intrigued by recent reports that water had been discovered on one of Saturn's moons, in part because he hopes it will bring people into theaters to see his alien-invasion story. News of the discovery on the moon of Enceladus coincided with a news conference for the movie, leading Gunn and his cast to speculate about life on other planets. "I love it," Gunn said. "I love the reports of possible life on other planets. I actually like this theory that they talked about of life being created in water and life came from the planet Mars many millions of years ago. So [they say] life was initially created on Mars, which could have come here on a meteor, and in fact life on Earth started on Mars. ... As a kid I always drew Martians, so I love the fact that I might be a Martian."
In Slither, aliens come to Earth on a meteor as fast-moving slugs that dive into a person's mouth and take over a human's personality. They eventually develop into a monstrous mass that threatens to destroy all life on the planet.
Star Nathan Fillion (Serenity) said life on other planets is inevitable. "For real, it's out there," he said. "The odds of it not happening more than once are outrageous. It's out there."
Co-star Elizabeth Banks added: "I'm open to it, that's certainly a possibility."
And Michael Rooker, who portrays the first human inhabited by the aliens, said: "I believe it. My cousin Earl is a Martian. He has the accent to prove it. He has a ray gun. He really is one." Slither opens nationwide on March 31. ?Mike Szymanski
