Galactica's finally back on the screen—and this time, it's also back in your hands

Bringing a much darker, grittier reality to the screen than the more flimsy fantasy that was the original series, the revived Battlestar Galactica has proven to be a huge success. The series has gained viewers worldwide through gripping character development and tense life-threatening situations as a small band of humans flee their home planets in search of the 13th colony—Earth.
One feature that usually makes or breaks action figures for me is the facial likeness.

Diamond Select Toys has brought fans something they've been demanding—action figures based on the characters from this new re-creation of what was a very popular 1970s phenomenon. In this wave we have Lee "Apollo" Adama, Chief Tyrol, Brendan "Hot Dog" Costanza, Samuel Anders, Karl "Helo" Agathon, Six and Caprica Six.

Each figure comes on a large bubble card with the new Battlestar Galactica logo at the top, with a photo and the name of the character on the bottom.

The figures measure around 7 inches in height, are made of hard and soft plastic and are well articulated for the most part. Not all of the figures come with accessories, but most do. The figures have a bit of heft to them; they're made of solid materials.

This series seems to be one of exclusives. While Apollo, Six and Hot Dog are not exclusive to any one outlet, Helo is exclusive to Action Figure Xpress, Anders is exclusive to fye/Suncoast, Tyrol is a Diamond Select Toys exclusive, and Caprica Six is a PX Previews exclusive.

So ... let the hunting begin!

A fine crew of humans ... or not
Starting with probably the main character among the humans we have Lee Adama, son of Cmdr. Adama, whose handle is "Apollo." He comes with a flight suit, including a holster that can hold the Colonial pistol he carries. His shoulders are ball-jointed for some outward motion and a full rotational range. The bicep is bisected for arm rotation, and he has a standard elbow hinge. A similar arrangement for the legs allows him to stand in good poses. The hip is double-jointed, allowing the legs to splay outward in a joint configuration I've not often seen.

He also comes with a flight helmet and two gloved hands to replace the bare hands that are ball-jointed at the wrists. The helmet is nice, made of two pieces which allow it to fit snugly on the ball-jointed head. He also comes with a small piece of gold.

"Hot Dog" Costanza is basically the same figure with a different head, meant to resemble Bodie Olmos (son of the actor who plays Cmdr. Adama). His gear is identical apart from the gold piece.

Karl "Helo" Agathon is dressed in his blue duty uniform, including holster and pistol. He has no extra hands, but his articulation is identical to Apollo's.

Chief Tyrol, not in his more familiar deck-chief overalls but in his greens, is equipped with an automatic rifle and a grenade launcher, as well as a red medi-kit.

Samuel Anders is depicted here with bare, bulging arms, wearing only his black vest and khaki pants. His upper arm swivel action is made possible due to a seam along the upper deltoid muscles. He is equipped with an automatic rifle and a smaller pistol than his Colonial soldier counterparts. The pistol fits into a holster worn around his waist.

This leaves the sole female character in this line, though she appears here as two versions, which is appropriate since they are different individual Cylons: Six and Caprica Six.

Six is seen here wearing the smoking-hot red dress that we often see her wear in pre-invasion scenes on Caprica, and often in scenes with Baltar in the present. The bodice of this dress is soft rubber attached to her chest. Spaghetti straps are painted on the upper torso. The lower half, separated for some waist rotation, is a rubber shell over her thighs, which makes her legs almost immobile. She does have knee articulation, but other than that her legs have very little posability. She comes with no accessories.

Caprica Six uses the same head and upper body (with a different, black bodice shell) but with black pants below, so her legs have the same articulation that the males have. She also is accessory-less.

One feature that usually makes or breaks action figures for me is the facial likeness. When they represent known faces, the similarity should be close. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give these figures an average of 6.

I find it unusual for Diamond to include Hot Dog when there are so many other more prominent characters fans want to see—where's Boomer? Where's Starbuck? Where's Adama? Tigh? Roslin? Baltar? Where are the toasters? Well, we'll see at a few of those in Wave 2, but I'm willing to bet not soon enough for the rabid fans. —Sean
