L.A. Con III
Ever wonder what a WorldCon is like? Wonder no more...
Review by Craig E. Engler
The WorldCon is a yearly gathering of science fiction fans and professionals that is unparalleled in scope. It is the mardi gras of science fiction (a scary thought if ever there was one), with awards, a masquerade, an art show, dozens of program tracks related to every aspect of science fiction, dances, socials, parties and, of course, the ever-popular dealer's room. But what does all this have to do with the Web? Fortunately for old hands and newcomers alike, it literally has everything to do with the Web. "Everything" in the sense that everything readers would want to know about the con can be found on its Web site.
The L.A. Con III Web site is perhaps the most extensive source of information for a convention ever created -- in any media. It contains contact lists, programming guides, explanations, directions, progress reports, weather reports, search features...anything and everything to do with the WorldCon, and more on top of that. Probably the best feature of the L.A Con III Web site is its online tour. The tour is a page-by-page Web journey through the entire site, covering every piece of information and link available. For those who are new to the convention scene or new to the WorldCon, this is a great way to find out exactly what's going on. The second best feature of the site is its virtual yellow pages, including a comprehensive e-mail directory, which serve as a quick reference guide. This is a handy spot for visitors who are looking for a specific piece of information. If they can't find it on this page, then an on-site search engine is only a click away. The only real flaw with the L.A. Con III site is the gaps in information, such as the complete programming guide or the guest list. Unfortunately, much of this information won't be available until just before the convention itself, so readers will have to keep checking back. But this site is such a pleasure to visit that most readers will enjoy the excuse to drop in again. Finally, a site that's everything it's advertised to be and more. Even if you're not going to the con, this will give you a good idea of what you're missing. -- Craig E. Previous Sci-Fi Site | Request a Review | Next Sci-Fi Site
