Interview

Interview: David Brin
You ask the questions

David Brin captured the imaginations of science fiction readers with his series of books set in the Uplift universe. He also captured the top awards of science fiction -- both the Hugo and Nebula for the second book in the series, Startide Rising (1983), and the Hugo for the third book, The Uplift War (1987). Amazingly, Brin had only begun his career in 1980 with the release of the first Uplift book and his first published novel, Sundiver. Last year he published the latest chapter in the Uplift saga, Brightness Reef, and the book has once again put Brin in the running for the Hugo (Brin is one of five nominees in the Best Novel category for this year's Hugo award).

Brin's popularity is not surprising. With a bachelor's degree in astronomy, a master's degree in applied physics and a doctorate in astrophysics, his scientific background is an impeccable basis for hard science fiction stories. But he achieves something many hard science fiction writers do not: a skillful integration of human interest and emotion with the problem-solving orientation of science. The man who stated, "I don't believe a series should dominate an author's writing career" also lives true to his word. Brin has published many novels outside of the Uplift universe, including The Postman, which is rumored to be on its way to the big screen. Nevertheless, Brin's most popular -- and arguably his best -- work remains the Uplift series.

Next issue Science Fiction Weekly will sit down with Brin to talk about his writing, his Uplift novels and the upcoming Hugo awards. As usual, we're letting our readers ask the questions, so if you have something you've always wanted to ask David Brin, please send us your question using the form below:
