Human/police detective, George's partner. Currently dating Cathy Frankel, a newcomer surgeon. Matt is kind of a loner.

Sam (George) Francisco

Newcomer/police detective, Matt's partner. Married to Susan, three children (Buck, Emily and Vessna). George is a definite family man.

Susan Francisco

Newcomer/businessperson. Married to George. Intelligent and adaptable.

Cathy Frankel

Newcomer/surgeon. Has no surviving family from the slave ship. Extremely professional, but wants stability.

Buck Francisco

Newcomer/gen X-er. With affirmative action dismantled, Buck has trouble finding himself. He doesn't want to flip burgers for the rest of his life.

Emily Francisco

Newcomer/student. Extremely intelligent, excels in school. Very young when liberated, Emily doesn't necessarily face the same prejudices as older newcomers, but she does not know as much about her native culture either.
