LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The Letters to the Editor department is intended to be a forum for our readers to express their own opinions and ideas. While we appreciate the many complimentary letters we receive each day, you won't find them on this page. Instead, you will find letters that go beyond or even contradict what we have written, letters that offer a different perspective and provide a different view of science fiction. If you would like to submit a letter, please use our comments form or send a message to scifiweekly@scifi.com.

Wants original fiction

I thoroughly enjoy your magazine and read it cover-to-cover (so to speak) every week in just one sitting. However, there is a way to improve it -- two words, original fiction. You are currently not accepting submissions of it. I can think of two reasons that you are not publishing short-stories:

  1. You're afraid that if the magazine is too long, people who are careful of the amount of time they spend on the Web (for cost reasons) won't read it.
  2. There are legal complications to publishing on the Web.

I understand that each of these reasons can present a problem in publishing original fiction, but if it can be done, do it. Science Fiction Weekly is already informative and a joy to read; I believe the only way to out-do yourselves is to include short stories in your regular line-up.

Editor: Thank you for the kind words and the suggestion, Mike. Actually, although the points you bring up need to be addressed in some fashion before we can add fiction, the simple fact is that we're not quite ready to add short stories to our publication...yet.

Whatever happened to Sunrise Theater?

I read with interest your review of "Sunrise Theater" and agree with your assessment of the site. The problem is apparently this site is no longer available on the net as I have not been able to access it for some time.

This is distressing because there are few sites dedicated to classic science fiction and this site was the best I had seen both in content and presentation. Do you have any information on "Sunrise Theater" as to why it is not accessible or if it will ever be available in the future. Thanks for your help.

Editor: I'm sorry to say that we're as baffled as you are. However, we'll keep an eye out for the site and let readers know if it reappears.

Wants more information on Anne Rice show

The Anne Rice as-yet-unnamed TV movie for CBS due out sometime in 1997-98, is this a "1 shot" deal or is it a "pilot" for a possible TV series?

Tegann
jstaurus@freenet.tlh.fl.us

Editor: Our understanding is that this will be a weekly one-hour drama, although in the volatile world of television nothing is ever certain.

A fun fact...sort of

Just a fun fact: Did you know that the cover of Schismatrix Plus has a mistake in it?

David Zucker
dnz@infohouse.com

Editor: Actually...no, I didn't. And I don't have a cover in front of me to look at. Want to let us in on the secret?

If you liked The Sparrow you'll also like...

Good review of The Sparrow. This book ranks as one of my two best for 1996 and one of the top 10 science fiction books I read in over 50 years of reading. Now, to finish off you must repeat must read Karen Hall's Dark Debts...

Editor: We'll pass the tip along to our readers, Martin. Thank you.

Ahem...it's "Beyond" not "By"

Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know that the name of the first episode you reviewed is Beyond the Sea, not By the Sea. Also, only 4 out of 5 for this one? You gave Darkness Falls a 5. I think that was a plot much more full of holes than either of these two.

Editor: Thanks Tom, and thanks to all of our readers who pointed out our error -- it has since been corrected. As to the ratings, we let our reviewers call them as they see them.

What's up with Battlefield Earth?

What ever happened to the proposed movie Battlefield Earth from the novel by Hubbard?

Steven Hendrickson
bigsteve@gamewood.net

Editor: Rumor has it the movie begins production this month, although we have nothing official on that yet.
