The Letters to the Editor department is intended to be a forum for our readers to express their own opinions and ideas. While we appreciate the many complimentary letters we receive each day, you won't find them on this page. Instead, you will find letters that go beyond or even contradict what we have written, letters that offer a different perspective and provide a different view of science fiction. Alien Resurrection bites!

Alien Resurrection was not as exciting as the other sequels. The writers of this film spent too much time concentrating on the cloning process and the scientific genre of the alien species. I thought the movie was exciting in the beginning, but as it got closer to the conclusion it started to bite. The alien queen giving birth to that whatever-it-was really was quite cheesy at best.

Let's just say, to make a great dish as a cook, you have to learn how to break some eggs. I just hope that the writers will go back and look at what made the other sequels a success and try to make [the] next sequel better than this dud.

There should be an Alien 5

Why are people bashing Alien Resurrection? I thought it was great, even better than Aliens in some respects. The film is not perfect, but it was more fun than sitting through nearly two hours of Alien3. Sigourney Weaver is awesome! I loved the way her character changed. This is the way she should have been in Aliens (I feel Newt kinda screwed up Ripley's character in the film). The alien creature effects were awesome! I was disappointed with the alien creature effects in Aliens. Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. did a superb job with the effects in Alien3. Their work in Alien Resurrection was their best yet! The aliens finally ran around in a realistic fashion that would probably make H.R. Giger proud.

Most people hated the newborn. Well, I went out and bought The Making of Alien Resurrection book. It had a section of conceptual artwork on the newborn. The original designs had no imagination at all! The finalized newborn was great and did a great job with its acting. Think about it: when a child is born, it does not get up, read the newspaper and drive to work. The newborn needed a mother. It did not find that in the alien queen but in Ripley. It was closer to Ripley because of its human DNA. Ripley also had a close connection to the newborn, and I can understand why she was sorry to see it die. I believe Fox will come out with Alien 5 and 6.

The report from Variety is similar to the reports coming out in 1992 after the Alien3 fiasco. There will be a sequel. Film studios usually lose money than make it. Film studios will keep making sequels as long as there is interest in the original film. We'll probably see a Starship Troopers sequel, heck, Miramax is coming out with a sequel to Scream 2 for crying out loud! There is even talk of a sequel to Austin Powers. If Fox decides not to make Alien 5 or 6, what a great way to end the saga! At least Ripley lives and is back on Earth, where she belongs.

Have respect for Alien fans

I just wanna say that I liked all the Alien 4 commentary. Yeah, you don't really learn the character's names in the movie let alone care about any of them (the wheelchair guy was the best). Also, there are no cool lines to repeat over and over again like in the second film. The only serious problem with Alien 4 was that Ripley was having sex with the aliens and wanted Winona Ryder also...what kind of sickness is that, especially to be putting it in an Alien movie? That was seriously disturbing...I know a French dude made the film and that stuff like that is common for European audiences but please have some respect for the Alien films fans...and then the alien baby at the end...what was the point? There was not enough time left in the movie after the thing was born for it to have any real purpose.

Lastly, I wanna say that the Alien movies are a continuous story. People need to get off this "it wasn't good like the second one" thing and let Alien 3 and 4 be their own tales.

Resurrection was good...until the end

Alien Resurrection was a great movie, but the climax was a disaster! What is with Ripley making love to a freakin' alien? Resurrection has some shining moments: The caged alien/breakout sequence, with aliens sacrificing a companion for freedom. That was beautiful.

What about the scenes where facehuggers are placed face-to-face with their new hosts? Bravo! And the underwater escape through a submerged kitchen? I'd rather have Jaws on my tail. But what should have been the best part of the movie made me puke! The newborn was no comparison to Giger's original nightmare, but what was it doing hugging our heroine? It should have been on a gorefest, killing everyone including Ripley. I just didn't buy the mother/sibling relationship. I felt like we had switched over to an episode of Muppet Babies.

Being a true Alien fan, I hope Fox does go ahead with Alien 5, as I can never get enough!

The Postman is nothing new

I'm surprised you haven't noticed that there's nothing new under the sun. The idea for a "post-apocalyptic" mailman [in The Postman] was first put forth in Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, written in 1977.

Likewise, Star Trek: First Contact. The Borg and the "go-into-the-past-to-eliminate-the-humans" scenario was lifted directly from Fred Saberhagen's Berserker novel Brother Assassin, written in 1969. The Borg themselves are nothing but warmed-over Berserkers.

Maybe authors these days just hope we won't notice.

Austin Powers was hilarious

Personally, I thought Austin Powers was a hilarious comedy. I am 18 years old and found the movie very entertaining. The movie is extremely popular throughout my high school. Students just can't say enough about it. I think most of them (including me) have the show memorized by now.

I wanted to add my comments about the movie, and say that I disagree with Kathie Huddleston's movie review.
