Two-time World Fantasy Award winner Jeff VanderMeer, author of City of Saints and Madmen and the upcoming Shriek: An Afterword, shares his thoughts about music, other authors and even beer in his weblog, VanderWorld. An eclectic mix of SF publishing news, personal anecdotes and even the occasional snippet of fiction, this blog offers a window into the life and work of one of the fantasy genre's most exciting young authors. The first thing a visitor will notice about this site is that VanderMeer is not only a writer but a hardcore reader: Book publication announcements and reviews occupy a place of honor within the blog. Recent entries discuss the career of Felicity Savage, Hal Duncan's novel Vellum and R. Scott Baker's The Thousandth Thought. Another entry offers an essential reading list of 60 fantasy novels as well as a more comprehensive list whose length is sheerly staggering. VanderMeer also writes briefly about the upcoming Best American Fantasy anthology he is co-editing with Matthew Cheney and Ann VanderMeer. Finally, links on VanderWorld include the official Web sites of authors from Kage Baker and Neil Gaiman to Lucius Shepard and Mervyn Peake.
VanderMeer is an enthusiastic blogger, posting frequent updates and jumping into discussions of his posts with both feet. His style and content range from the serious to the irreverenta given VanderPost might as easily be about the author's latest workout or his exchange of hostile e-mails with the local coffee shop as about a noteworthy book. Fans may also want to watch for appearances by Evil Monkey, an alter-ego who pops in now and then to give VanderMeer a hard time. |
