Cory Doctorow's Craphound
http://www.craphound.com

By Ken Newquist

Information wants to be free. Cory Doctorow wants to show that it can be free, and that as an author he can still get paid for it. His Web site Craphound is at the forefront of the experiment, providing a steady stream of fiction and nonfiction content.
The full text of Cory's novel Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town is available as a download, and befitting Doctorow's stance on digital freedom, there's no digital rights management built into any of the files. Moreover, it's been released under Creative Commons, allowing other people to convert and redistribute the book. This has given rise to an episodic, page-a-day RSS feed implementation of the book as well as a Second Life artifact. Fans can also find free downloads of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and Eastern Standard Tribe.

Some of this content finds its way into audio form and can be downloaded via a podcast-style RSS feed. So far he's released audio versions of Eastern Standard Tribe, his short stories "Ownz0red," "Power Punctuation" and "When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth," and the novella-in-progress "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow/Now Is the Best Time of Your Life."

Nonfiction content abounds as well. The RSS feed regularly features audio of Doctorow's interviews and public talks, while the Web site sees a steady stream of blog posts about ongoing projects, new columns, writing and technology news. Doctorow is a vocal, and occasionally controversial, speaker on topics such as copyright, DRM and Creative Commons licensing, and anyone interested in such topics would do well to keep up with what he has to say ... even if they don't always agree with him.
