Founded in 1972 by members of The Count Dracula Society, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films is a Southern California-based body of movie fans who screen, study and celebrate any and all movies with a speculative slant. The Academy is the organization that gives out the Saturn Awards, honoring genre films that, too often, succeed at the box office while failing to earn any serious critical respect. The Academy Web page is an index to cinematic excellence in the SF, fantasy and horror genres over the past 35 years. It serves as guide to the best of the current crop of recently released films. Television shows and direct-to-DVD releases have, over the years, earned their own awards categories on the Saturn ballot, which never attempts to compare apples to oranges. Instead, the Academy has separate categories for SF, fantasy and horror films, as well as for animated, international and action-adventure pictures.
As a film-appreciation society, the Academy concentrates its efforts on holding screenings and judging movies. It is open to new members, and out-of-state fans, who cannot attend screenings, can join the organization at a discounted rate. There are no reviews, screen grabs or discussion forums here; instead, what this Web page primarily offers is a history of the organization and a list of every film or filmmaker to receive a Saturna "best-of" listing, in other words, that covers the genre since the early 1970s. |
