Chicago is a city that is no stranger to crime. In the 1920s, Al Capone and his mob reigned supreme over The Windy City for years. Nearly three-quarters of a century later, gangland Chicago is little more than a faint memory, but once again the city finds itself in the grip of a terrible crime wave. This time, however, the criminals are evil personified, and they are intent on the destruction of humankind. They are, in a word, monsters.
Special Unit 2 is set in Chicago, where a covert team of undercover police officers search for "missing links," creatures that have slipped through the evolutionary cracks and now prey on and terrorize mankind.
Armed with an arsenal of specialized weapons and little else, the men and women of Special Unit 2 must locate and contain — or destroy — these subspecies, which are bent on the destruction of human life as we know it. In addition, the team-members must keep their mission, as well as the existence of the missing links they pursue, a complete secret in order to prevent public pandemonium.
Special Unit 2 is the brainchild of veteran TV writer-producer Evan Katz, who created and co-executive produced Paramount's action-drama series Three, and who also served as co-producer on Paramount's critically acclaimed hit drama series JAG.
The show's diverse gallery of creatures are the creations of the show's production and creature designer, renowned cinematic artist Patrick Tatopoulos. Tatopoulos' creatures, special effects, costumes and production designs have entertained moviegoers in such films as Independence Day, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Godzilla, Stuart Little, Jumanji, Stargate and The Addams Family.
Speaking about Special Unit 2, Tatopoulos said, "This is my first opportunity to work on a television series, and it is great fun creating a whole new look and imaginative creatures each week. Sci-fi has no limits, so you can come up with wild concepts, but the challenge is not to repeat yourself."
Creator and executive producer Katz noted that in developing Special Unit 2, he set out to create a show that is "a wild ride for the audience week after week. If you like a good police story, we've got that. If the fantastic creatures excite you, we've got that, too. Most of our scenes are either humorous or action-oriented."
Evan Katz is the show's creator and served as its executive producer. John Kretchmer and Roee Sharon were its producers.
