Synopsis: His officers and best friends don't know it, but Kirk is on an old hunt -- when he should be heading the ship away on a mercy mission. He's determined to track down and destroy a gaseous creature that lives off human blood plasma. But this fight is personal. During his early career on the USS Farragut the creature killed his commanding officer, Captain Garrovick, and several shipmates. Kirk has always blamed himself for their deaths because he delayed firing his phasers at a crucial moment. Now, years later, Garrovick's son is part of Kirk's crew and is blaming himself for the similar fate that has befallen some crewmembers of the Enterprise. To free them both from the guilt, Kirk invites Garrovick to help him set an antimatter bomb baited with blood ... before the creature can spawn and spread.
