Synopsis:
Medusans are a noncorporeal species renowned for their aptitude in spatial navigation -- and left
virtually recluses by their unfortunate visage, which shocks humanoids into insanity on sight.
Traveling within his own transport chamber for safety as part of a Federation exchange project,
Medusan ambassador Kollos checks aboard the Enterprisewith a human engineer, Larry Marvig, and
telepath Miranda Jones, who has no fear of injury since she is blind -- a fact she initially
keeps hidden. Marvig is smitten with Jones, but when spurned he approaches Kollos in a jealous
rage, sending the starship out of the galaxy amid his resulting madness. Spock successfully
mind-melds with Kollos to navigate back and avoid the galactic barrier's sensory effects on
humanoids, using a special visor to shield his gaze. Thanks to the jealous Jones' telepathic
suggestion, he goes mad himself when he forgets the visor while breaking the meld -- and Kirk
realizes only she and her own special psionic gifts hold the key to restoring his sanity.
