I had a close sighting on the morning of December 6, 1996. I live in West Palm Beach, Fla. It was just after 6:00 AM [EST], the sun was up, it was not dark, and there were low-lying clouds.

I walked outside to get the newspaper, and as I walked down the driveway I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, something over my right shoulder, not too far up — just a couple hundred yards at most, though it was hard to judge distance as I could not identify the object and did not know its size.

The first thing that registered in my mind's eye was a bird of prey, as it glided silently and was somewhat wing-shaped. I turned to look and realized it was far too large to be a hawk or an eagle. It was rigid [and] brownish gray, with a textured surface and scalloped edges — somewhat metallic-looking. I thought to myself, "It must be a kite or ultralight plane," but it was silent and rigid, ruling out both those options. I watched intently as it crossed over my house from west to southeast.

My house faces south so I had a very good look as I watched it move slowly. As the back of the object came into view, I realized there was a faint glow about it. It approached a low-lying cloud and I expected it to disappear into the cloud but it did not. As it entered the cloud, the mist was disrupted and moved apart. The "glow" about the craft became very apparent as it got farther into the cloud. I watched until it was no longer visible. The cloud continued to separate, and it remained visible until [it got] too far away to be seen. It seemed to change shape as it got further away. Not just its appearance, but the way the cloud mist moved from its path, and the "glow" of white/yellow light all around it, made me think it could not be identified as terrestrial.

I would guess it was about 70+ feet across. I anxiously looked for other neighbors who may have seen it too, but nobody else was outside. I then called the nearest airport to see if there were any ultralights or other similar craft flying that morning. They denied knowledge of any craft other than commercial jets in the air at 6:00 AM, and of course I heard them laughing.

I was excited and amazed. It was not a plane, not a kite, not an ultralight, and it behaved like nothing I have seen before. I got a good, close look and it was no bird!

There have been other sightings in the area through the years, but not of a wing-shaped craft — not that I have heard of, anyway. I have always accepted that the universe is most likely teeming with life, but I tried to be objective and observe carefully, even though my heart was racing! I wish a neighbor had been outside to confirm my sighting, and where is your camera when you need it! I now leave a loaded camera near the door, just in case.

I am of sound mind, a health-care professional, and surely had not been drinking at 6:00 AM!

Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. I am anxious to see if others report a similar craft.

We sent Deborah's encounter story to the researchers at UFORCE International. UFORCE Executive Director Christopher Montgomery provided the following comments and analysis.

I have a close personal friend who has witnessed UFOs with me during my years of UFO investigation. This gentleman had confided in me recently that I was one of the few people with whom he could share his UFO encounters. The reason for this, he continued, was that there are still people out there who ridicule anyone who claims to have seen a UFO! I am amazed that, despite the fact that recent polls reveal that the majority of people out there believe that earth is being visited by an intelligence from other worlds, the minority of people continue to ostracize those who come forward, claiming to have seen them! The same holds true for those who have had a close encounter with UFO occupants.

Would it surprise you to learn that even UFO investigators see UFOs? We present to you a case in point: On the evening of September 8, 2000, a triangular UFO was sighted at 9:00 PM near the offices of the UFO Resource Center, Northwest Regional Headquarters, Seattle, Wash. This sighting was well-documented and was seen by several eyewitnesses, including myself. This sighting was later triangulated from two separate locations. The information immediately was sent out as a press release. It was an article that circled the globe several times. Here is a portion of that article:
"We observed the UFO for about 15 minutes as it behaved very strangely. It did not look like a conventional airplane. When it moved, the object's body would turn while in one spot. It would go sideways as the light was pointing away from its destination. I continued to watch it until it disappeared behind a tree. I asked MC: "Do you think it is a UFO?" His answer was "It's a good possibility." I continued to watch the object. I suddenly found myself alone on the rear terrace. The object's lights had been doing funny things. For example, when it turned, its lights breezed over me, very faintly illuminating the surrounding area, including myself. It made me want to shudder, as I don't think these were earthly lights. That observation didn't really hit home, until I watched it go north, level with the crest of the hill we are perched on, and go north up the valley, practically at eye level. It was a cream or beige color, dimly illuminated, as if the color was a result of the illumination. It had three, distinctive lights on each point of the triangular shape and when I viewed it as a profile shot when it went up the valley, it was very thin."

In the Deborah encounter, the eyewitness states, "I am of sound mind, a health-care professional, and surely had not been drinking at 6 a.m.!" The first thing that most eyewitnesses want to do is immediately establish their credibility. I am quick to remind anyone reading this that many credible witnesses report seeing UFOs around the world, on a daily basis.

THE CREDIBILITY OF UFO WITNESSES

Most would agree that the testimony given by a police officer in a court of law is persuasive evidence. The testimony of several police officers makes the case even stronger. Yet if that same police officer were to get up on the witness-stand and provide eyewitness testimony and corroborating evidence regarding UFO sighting, many people would question the validity of their testimony simply because they saw an unidentified flying object. Does the testimony given by several police officers now make the case winnable? Would this corroborating evidence now stand up in a court of law? In my opinion, when several police officers, a citizen and an emergency dispatcher provide eyewitness testimony concerning a UFO sighting, it becomes irrefutable evidence that UFOs do exist.

In the following case, numerous police officers from different cities pursued a boomerang UFO across the countryside. An officer from the Millstadt (Ill.) Police Department was even able to photograph the object and draw a detailed sketch of this triangular-shaped object. (We have that information on our Web site.)

The chase began when the St. Clair County emergency dispatch reported that a citizen walked into the Highland, Ill., police station claiming a UFO sighting while on the way to work. After hearing the report from the dispatcher, a Lebanon, Ill., police officer spotted the object while sitting in his police cruiser. He described the UFO as "two lights ... radiating so much light that the spectacle looked like the Japanese 'rising sun' symbol on the horizon." The officer decided to give chase. He caught up with the UFO and later reported, "The object was distinctly triangular in shape, when viewed from below." Here is an excerpt from this case report:
"At this point, the object suddenly accelerated quite dramatically, and seemed to streak to the west, covering several miles," the officer estimated, "in just a few seconds." The officer apprised the St. Clair County Emergency Dispatch that he had the object in sight, and advised them as to the direction it was moving. He recommended they contact the towns of Millstadt and Dupo, to have officers there attempt to spot this unidentified flying object.

At that time an officer from the Millstadt Police Department overheard the broadcast, and moved his cruiser to a dark part of that town to see if he could spot the object in the night sky. He quickly spotted the object to the west, at approximately 45 degrees above the horizontal plane, and gauged its size as "huge." He estimated that it was "one or two stories" tall, and perhaps "three stories long." It had "several very bright lights on it."

St. Clair Dispatch requested the officer attempt to get a photograph of the object, which he was able to do with the Polaroid-type camera stored in the trunk of his cruiser. Because the outside temperature was low, approximately 18-20 degrees Fahrenheit, neither the camera nor the film functioned well. Consequently, the resolution of the photograph is poor. After the Millstadt officer had taken the photograph, the object appeared to move further to the west, moving toward Dupo, Ill., and St. Louis, Mo. A Dupo police officer might have witnessed the object, as well, and officers from Shiloh, Ill., might also have seen the object.

MILITARY INVOLVEMENT ... OR COVER-UP?

In the Millstadt encounter, the officers had received unconfirmed reports that jet fighters from a nearby Air National Guard unit might have been "scrambled" to "take a look" at the UFO. The nearest unit probably was the Missouri Air National Guard. It is well known that they regularly fly F-15s in and out of Lambert Field/St. Louis Airport. There are secondhand reports that F-15s were seen at approximately 4:20 a.m.

At one point during the sighting, witnesses had estimated that "the object was within two to three statute miles of Scott Air Force Base." That base subsequently announced their tower "was closed at the time of the sighting" and that "none of their personnel was aware of the sighting, and none had seen the object."
