DEEP THROAT

BACKGROUND:

Our clandestine operative [NAME WITHHELD] — whom Mulder and Scully designated "Deep Throat" in homage to the unnamed Watergate source of Washington Post reporters Woodward and Bernstein — supplied the X-Files agents with both information and disinformation early in their partnership. This was in order to keep these talented albeit expendable agents investigating aspects of the aliens' infiltration that might have eluded even us.

At one point — tellingly, in retrospect — [NAME WITHHELD], in a troubled voice, told C.G.B. Spender a.k.a. "The Cigarette-Smoking Man," "You're the killer. I'm the liar." At some point, [NAME WITHHELD] apparently developed empathy for the agents, possibly in conjunction with narrow, highly parochial ethical concerns. In May 1994, he unfortunately led Scully to the "Purity Control" hybridization experiments that fused alien genetic material with the DNA of human subjects. On the night of May 10, 1994, our operative code-named Crew-Cut Man was dispatched to seal this breach with extreme prejudice. [NAME WITHHELD], a patriot until that point, was permitted the honor of a public funeral; our surveillance on his family continues to confirm they are unaware of his involvement with the Syndicate, or the true scope of events in which he participated.
